Winamp wins the deal in my PC

Winamp wins the deal in my PC

My resource crunched computer was having issues playing a few media files. After a little of haggling, negotiations and bargain, the deal gets clinched.  Winamp takes over as an official media player. It has more powerful features:

  1. Support for an extensive media formats.
  2. Faster loading
  3. Lesser memory footprint
  4. Lesser UI to paint for Windows (means less load on the CPU and (graphical) memory

Who told a personal home PC can not have stringent restrictions?

Who told a personal home PC can not have stringent restrictions?

It is a common illusion that if it is a home PC exposed and hooked to Internet we can surf at any nonsense websites inviting more raja/tama into our hearts. No way. My PCs always had stringent access controls loaded into them. Being a technical architect by profession I also ensure that my PCs are built with security walls for ethics and normal functioning as well.

Just thought I would share a snapshot of advertisement loaded in Yahoo Mail (opened in new Tab for better illustration) which got kicked by the parental control powered by OpenDNS.

Solicitation of Politics

Solicitation of Politics

I recently received an email asking me about a political situation review. Curtly I sent back the response 'Bad request. Request rejected'. I always maintain the stand to keep aloof of politics in any sort. The nations administration alone need politics and the stalwarts managing the nation know how to tackle it. Politics anywhere else is only disastrous and is going to do no good.

I just thought I would share this view too. The next time if he is going to solicit political view I am going to send him a PayPal invoice. I do have a lot of philanthropic commitments on the way to meet with.

Google Chrome -- The Choice Web Browser

Google Chrome -- The Choice Web Browser

I am currently using Google Chrome as the choice web browser leaving behind FireFox for  few days since now. Internet Explorer hasn't been in my list because of shortcomings with respect to my browsing habits including its preference to flood my taskbar whereas the other browsers target tabs in lieu of windows.

The other cute things I like in Chrome are:

  1. V8 Scripting Engine (which is blazingly faster)[Warning: A number of websites might break if they use incompatible scripts]
  2. If a website is taking too much resource just hit Shift+Escape to invoke Chrome Task Manager and kill that tab alone. Even within the tab, Shockwave Flash, AddOns are separately listed. So if these components are malfunctioning, it is easy to 'cut their tails'.

NL domain was a gift to LD

NL domain was a gift to LD

I remember recieving comments from some one called 'Nithya Lavanya' till even Aug. I used to see that profile and it contained an URL. But start of the previous week the URL was missing. When I was trying to see what happened to the URL in 'Start a Blog', it seems the name is available indicating that the blogger has destroyed it. Not sure what is cause of destroying the blog.

I just thought a constructive name and a healthy blog should not land in the hands of another cybersquatter. Hence chose to signup with the same. I believe you like it. If by luck the other blogger gets a chance to view it I would be glad to have their comment too.

This is another gesture that I would like to share with others. When you signup for a TLD too be wary of whether you would maintain it. Else what happens if you start the content for sometime and then purge it a cybersquatter would take it and do mischief. Recently I observed one such issue with http://www.dinakaran.com/. The 'Font Help' page was pointing a page in newdinakaran.com. I am not sure whether it was URL typo or they had a domain. Now a cybersquatter is occupying that URL.

With our VENS philosophy I have reported this to dotcom (at) dinakaran.com and they are investigating the same.

NL taught me a lesson...

NL taught me a lesson...

The newly created blog (NL) taught me a very good lesson. No sooner did I post a blog today on blogging itself than I got a comment from some called Rajendran. I was wondering how come it appeared because I never remembered approving any comments on that.  One good thing to learn about blogger.

When you create a new blog the following are the comment settings (by default)

  1. All comments are accepted without moderation
  2. CAPTCHA is ON
  3. Comments are accepted from 'Registered Users' (Google Account or OpenID are required)
I would, on a personal preference, would like to customize this as below:

  1. Comments routed through a moderation. Notification is optional. I disable it because it adds to my pile of load in Inbox.
  2. CAPTCHA is OFF. Many people suggested me that Google Captcha is difficult.
  3. I prefer this. There are many pranksters shouting gibberish with anonymous.

There were a few comments on my Views and Reviews vehemently opposing the bad things (service or products) or shortcomings. I just thought of clarifying this here. The purpose of V&R is give an unbiased opinion on a product or service besides bringing out a healthier review platform. On these fronts I don't think some lazy assholes can expect I would budge by their demands of not writing about them. Let them turn ethical and I would appreciate them first. If they are unethical they would need to witness a critical review. That is what my Tamil has taught me.

You can hear the verses from the rich Tamil lifestyle over here (Thiruvilayadal and Vettaikaran)

Watching Inidhu Inidhu today

Watching Inidhu Inidhu today

Today being Friday and a weekend just came to my home a bit early. Then drove to a nearby theater to watch Inidhu Inidhu. The film seemed to have been just released by Aug 20 and I have watched it in a week's time. I believe this is one of the first films which I see in its nascent stage. I have never had an tighter interest and/or affinity to films.

So what has caused this change to be swept in?

  1. Was that the signs of my alma mater in the movie?
  2. A little relaxation after the really hectic week?
  3. A little soothing comfort to the aching soul and the paining heart?
Coming back to the film it does not have any long running stories, fights or like that. However it takes you back to your college days that demonstrates an innocent smile, flawless friendship and an affectionate love. As the climax of the story reveals the farewell is a very painful one. After four years of being together this is the most cruel day to strew the tight-bound friends apart. I would at this point recall a song from another Tamil movie which also speaks about this 'கண்ணீரில் தான் எங்கள் farewell  party'.

Some of the features I actually hated in the film were:
  1. Scenes of ragging. VIT demonstrated a no-tolerance of ragging and I believe they should have avoided these gestures from the holy campus.
  2. Taints of friendship getting into the lines of romance. Well! I have no more comments in this as it might lead to controversies.
Anyways a film that is a good to watch after a long time. Kollywood has seen a 'watchable' film after really really a long time. Thanks to Prakashraj and Duet Pictures for bringing out this film.

The Annual Ritual of Yajur Upakarma

The Annual Ritual of Yajur Upakarma

Today is Yajur Upakarma. Quite similar to Deepavali 2009 there has been an interesting date clash with Yajur Upakarma this year too. India and Eastern countries were directed to observe Yajur Upakarma on 24th and Gayatri Japam on 25th whereas UK, USA (and westward) were to observe both on 24th itself. This was in line with the directions from Sri Ahobila Mutt. Whereas the Srirangam calendars and the priests at Ranganatha temple, Pomona NY were holding the point that the Indian calendar could be upheld across the globe too.

A few smartha priests were opining that either way should be looking good and befitting the convenience of the users.

My sincere thanks to the following people for helping me to complete the Yajur Upakarma in a very pious and religious way.

  1. Vimala Rajaji mami for helping with the things through mail in a quick way.
  2. Ahobilam.com team for quickly rewriting the Sankalpam and emailing the same one night before according to the geography of the users.
  3. The step-by-step PDF of Yajur Upakarma from www.ahobilam.com.
I also just thought I would also share our way of having festive but pious lunch through a simple video.Perhaps this is a poor man's lunch but not just in a pious way but to cater to the hunger calls of the abdomen.

VENS Report to CSSI

VENS Report to CSSI

Whilst casually surfing the website of my previous organization (http://www.cssolutionsinc.com/) I observed two issues. In the Privacy Policy the email address of Public Relation was incorrectly mentioned as mailto:mailto: pr@cssolutionsinc.com. Furthermore the 'Careers' menu alone was standing out separately from the rest of the cloud in the screen. I hence chose to record these as a video session and share it with Paul (CEO) so that he can take it to the web development team and get them addressed.

I am glad to have this opportunity to tip off my previous organization with a malady in the website.

Site Error Assistance to Integreon

Site Error Assistance to Integreon

I was browsing a website called http://www.integreon.com/ referred from a LinkedIn profile. The search engine was mysteriously failing and throwing back gibberish responses for even very simple queries. I filed a report to them under our VENS initiative and they are currently investigating the server issues to rectify the same. I  have attached the report attachment and the response from Integreon team for the benefit of everyone.

An appreciation from Bottomline Technologies, New Jersey for our VENS report

Whilst casually surfing Bottomline Technologies website I found out several issues ranging from technical bugs to privacy contact discrepancies. As part of our VENS initiative I chose to have these reported to Bottomline Management. The Bottomline Management completed their part of the investigation, acknowledged our report and thanked us for the tipoff and alert.

A helping hand to PlanetHR, a recruitment consultancy firm from Chennai

A helping hand to PlanetHR, a recruitment consultancy firm from Chennai

I needed to strike a business relationship with PlanetHR a reputed recruitment consultancy organization operating from Chennai. Since some one gave the lead of this agency and whilst doing the preliminary background investigation of the same I found out their website itself ("the first impression") was (and is) in doldrums. I hence chose to report the same to the domain administrators of the same.

According to the domain ownership, the website was belonging to Consim (A BharatMatrimony Initiative). Interestingly the reply from Consim reports that the business had been sold of by Consim and the present owners  are demonstrating a callous attitude in not evening updating their ownership records.

Issues reported to CONSIM:

(1) PlanetHR website was not working fine (refer attachment this is shown above)
(2) Since one of the recipients of the owner of PlanetHR (sarathy@bharatmatrimony.com) bounced I again chose to report the same.

The response from CONSIM took one business day clarifying that the address is no longer valid and PlanetHR was obliged to have changed these after the business sale was complete.

This particular VENS investigation reveals the following:

  1. Callousness and irresponsibility of PlanetHR group [Negative]
  2. Prompt response of Consim Consim went a way ahead to solve another allied issue with respect to the incorrect addresses on part of them.[Positive]

A VENS-Initiative to contain the progress of a potential spammer

About a few days back I had a few half dozen emails by some one requesting signup for some IPKall service. Not sure what is that stupid crappy dirty shitty service. When I tested it was not working too. I really got irritated because the spammer repeatedly nagging to signup for that service. Thanks to our newly launched VENS initiative and in line with the same the same was reported to Zoho Antispam Team.

The team sprung into action and they have isolated the spammer from contaminating the network as another help call from that spammer reveals. Again he is broadcasting to everyone. This is my little humble token service to the Internet fraternity to ensure spam-free communications. In other words a little mission to eradicate the harmful shrubs in the other beautiful information orchard.

A Bug Report to NASSCOM on Search System Error

About a week back whilst browsing NASSCOM website I had a few issues with the top navigation panel. On a good samaritan gesture I reported the same to them. They did a few investigations on their website. They identified a few issues and launched a general cleanup on the website as well as confirmed in one of the response but were unable to reproduce on the exact issues that I had reported like broken hyperlinks on the top navigation panel. I was unable to reproduce it as well. Effectively that got landed up as an intermittent random bug. Random bugs are always dangerous since they haunt the software in multiple dimensions in varied magnitude.

Interestingly about two days after that I hit upon the search breakage again and this time I chose to record the same as a video so that it would be easier for them to fix the same. I just thought I would share this helping gesture with other VENS fans. I believe they are now investigating the issue on that front. I would keep you posted with the updates from NASSCOM team.

Zoho சனியன் போய் தொலஞ்சுது

Zoho சனியன் போய் தொலஞ்சுது

I had an interesting experience with a particular embedded post in Zoho Show in this link. Zoho seems to have a bug and the sheet keeps autofocussing even in its embedded form. Going by our VENS concept I have reported the same to Zoho Sheet and they are supposedly fixing  the same. Since the clock jumped to next day now, that post got tucked and rolled into archives thus getting away from the unwanted scrolling of the page to the embedded post thing.

As the support person has written the bug seems to be non IE browser and this clearly proves our review on Chrome about a few minutes ago.

Happy Rakshabandhan to my sisters

Happy Rakshabandhan to my sisters

Rakshabandhan comes tomorrow (August 24 2010). I would be little busy the whole day as it coincides with Yajur Upakarma (Avani Avittam). Hence I just thought I would share the Raksha Bandhan wishes on the eve of Raksha Bandhan.

  1. In the wellbeing of my fraternity lies the greatness of India
  2. With the sweet fragrance of the greatness of India alone lies my happiness.

நான் நினைத்த திருநாள் ஒருநாள் இதுதானே ...

As my twitter would have expressed, today greets me as most happiest day for LavanyaDeepak. Our kitten 'Prathiba's wedding invitaton finally started to rollout.

And today is my school classmate Priya's wedding anniversary too. Let us wish her a 'Happy Wedding Anniversary'. It was this day (August 23 2009) that my wedding cards started to rollout. We did have a few scenic developments that serve(d) as a hallmark of the year. It was Ganesh Chaturthi of 2009 too.

Twitter is over capacity

Twitter is over capacity

Not sure what is causing the issue but today morning I have been seeing the following message 'Twitter is overcapacity' consistently as below:

For very brief thought sharing I normally share it out through my tweets at http://www.twitter.com/lavanyadeepak/

A lending hand to UAE based LS2Corp

A lending hand to UAE based LS2Corp

Through our initiative of VENS, we are hereby lending our helping hands to the UAE-based LS2 Corporation. Whilst casually surfing we observed a few issues in their website. The issues are as below:

  1. Interesting coincidence of the executive BIOs carrying typographical mistakes in their associated LinkedIn profiles.
  2. Grave Typo of the word 'disclaimer' right in the homepage'
  3. The copyright year has not been updated since 2009
  4. Possibly fake or Inadvertent overlook of the web team at LS2Corp to mention about their offshore addresses. One of the LinkedIn profiles mention a Chennai but no where in Ls2's official website, Chennai is being mentioned as their operative regions.
  5. "What is LS2?" -- No where in the website this acronym has been explained
  6. We did share out a small suggestion on the news where an old obsolete way of POP windows is being resorted to.

VENS Maiden Candidate (Toondoo)

VENS Maiden Candidate (Toondoo)

We welcome whole-heartedly the maiden and as a pilot candidate (Toondoo). On 15th May 2010 when the initial plans of VENS was being beta tested, Toondoo was observed with Twenty-Eight observations, with an assorted collection of bugs and suggestions. The same have been consolidated in the spreadsheet below.

We thank Zoho Network for being inspiring in the following perspectives:

  1. Zoho Sheet was used to record the action items
  2. Toondoo is in a way part of Adventnet (parent company of Zoho Corp), the owners of Zoho products.

VENS -- An Introduction

VRS -- Voluntary Retirement Service is a scheme launched by Government of India sometime back so that government employees can retire early and enjoy their personal time. They get a golden handshake too besides this youngsters get an opportunity for employment.

What is then VENS?

It is Voluntary Error Notification Service. We visit a lot of websites and get services from a lot of providers. We do think of a lot of suggestions that can go in it besides we encounter a lot of shortcomings. I just thought of envisaging this channel to bring out this for the benefit of everyone. This, I hope, should be a valuable B2B as well B2C platform and create a unique win-win situation for all.

Under this scheme we would discuss in brief regarding the following:

  1. Brief intro about the service/provider
  2. Suggestion about the particular service feature
  3. Complaint about the shortcoming
  4. How and where it was taken to them?
  5. Was it reciprocated in time?
  6. How was it reciprocated?
  7. Was the suggestion incorporated in time or the malady remedied in time? This is very important because valuable suggestions should see realisations for the benefit of everyone. "நல்லதோர் வீணை செய்து நலங்கெட அதை புழுதியில் எறிவார் உண்டோ" is the famous saying of Sri Subramania Bharathy.
The noble objectives of this mission are:

  1. Avoid backtalking about a service or website. If there is something talk it forward.
  2. "One candle lights another and in the process the room grows more brighter". We are effectively venturing into a more healthy brainstorming.
  3. An open platform would mean absolute transparency. A particular unscrupulous creature in the particular organization or elsewhere can not vouch and/or endorse any form of 'Credit Theft'.
Well! That is in brief about VENS. Let us get started on this noble vision.

Yippee! I am now empowered with Anti-spam engine for Comments too

Yippee! I am now empowered with Anti-spam engine for Comments too

The blogger has recently introduced 'Spam Detection' for comments too as it showed in the Comment Moderation panel. I think this should bring to an end the nasty funky chinese comments and those of the viagra flavor.

Should your blog get one, take the rifle and shoot it down and throw that into the 'Spam' oven to bake it. Spam is really tasty.

A real soul-stirring and encouraging music ...

A real soul-stirring and encouraging music ...

The film Autograph has another soul-stirrer and a definitive encouraging song for everyone in all phases of life. You can watch the song here. It makes one so sit straight even in the most depressed condition.

Some of the promising verses are:

நம்பிக்கை என்பது வேண்டும் நாம் வாழ்வில்
லட்சியம் நிச்சயம் வெல்லும் ஒரு நாளில்

(We would need to nurture fond hopes in the lives to enlighten it and embrace the victory and accomplishment of the objectives)

மனமே ஓ மனமே நீ மாறிவிடு
மலையோ அது பனியோ நீ மோதி விடு

(O Mind. Realise, Repent and Change Yourself. Hill or Valley -- Let us encounter it)

உளி தாங்கும் கற்கள் தானே மண் மீது சிலையாகும்
வலி தாங்கும் உள்ளம் தானே நிலையான சுகம் காணும்

(The stone that endures the drills only gets morphed into a statue which becomes a timeless elegance and beauty. No pains; No gains)

Rid the past and Greet the novel

Rid the past and Greet the novel

It has been time since the blog design was revamped. Today it had undergone a major overhaul and more shiny look and feel. The design that is more robust to handle the elements and search/user-friendly. Care has been ensured so that there is not much learning curve for the users navigating through the blog.

Enakke Enakku Ennai Pidikka Villai ...

Enakke Enakku Ennai Pidikka Villai ...

Today had a chance to view Autograph the classic Indian movie in Tamil directed, produced and starred by Cheran. Many would know and recall the poem 'Gnapakam varuthe ...', which I admit is evergreen melodious. But there is another touching song called "Ninaivugal nenjinil" which even embraces the heart so much and melts it down.

At least Senthil ('Cheran') got a good friend Sneha to capture him back from the scary whirlpools. I really pity a few souls who are not even blessed with such beacon light. To the depressed there becomes a situation that neither anyone seems to be listening to them nor life-breath is comfortable anymore. Not sure how come the people who have the upperhands are able 'trash the oppressed as paper-cups'.

I am not a world-guru but just another casual friend. At least this blog post I dedicate this post as a soothing comfort for the oppressed. This particular sentence took me 45 minutes to complete. I would be glad if the post is able carry the message of the poem to people and bridge the gaps.

Kudos to Cheran and team for bringing out this masterpiece.

A Brief Shanip Pradosham Pooja Today

A Brief Shanip Pradosham Pooja Today

Today being saturday (weekend-holiday) I just thought of doing a small Shanip Pradosham Pooja. Pradosham on Saturday is considered very auspicious and is called as Shanip Pradosham. The next Shanip Pradosham seems to be on August 21 of this month.

Screen clippings and sectional music chantings have been compiled into a video below.

The Greatness of Sri Rama :: One-To-One in the Family

The Greatness of Sri Rama :: One-To-One in the Family

After killing Ravana, Lord Rama is resting on a rock. He notices a shadow approaching him. He realises that the shadow is that of a woman. He does not lift His eyes to see who it is, for, Lord Rama never looks at any woman other than Sita. As the shadow nears Him, Lord Rama pulls His feet up, and sits with His legs folded. This is to avoid even the shadow of the unknown woman touching His feet. So careful is He that none other than His wife should touch Him.

Lord Rama is particular that even the shadow of another woman should not touch Him, said M.V. Anantapadmanabhachariar, in a discourse. The shadow is then seen to recede. Lord Rama wonders who it is, who had come so close to Him and had yet retreated. So He inquires who the person is.

The shadow is that of Mandodari, and she discloses who she is. Lord Rama asks her why she is there. She says she heard that Ravana was killed in battle. Ravana had been a king who had struck fear in the hearts of his enemies. Everyone believed him to be invincible. And yet, he had been killed by someone. She had come to the battlefield to look at the man who killed her husband. She wanted to know what quality He had that her husband did not have. Lord Rama then asks her whether she found what that quality was. Mandodari says she has found that quality. Lord Rama is particular that even the shadow of a woman other than his wife should not touch Him. Ravana, on the other hand, was willing to sacrifice so many lives in his attempt at making another man's wife his. Therein lies the difference. That one quality of Lord Rama has led to His victory, says Mandodari.

Ravana's sin had been so heinous that he had been slain. There was right on the side of Lord Rama. And He was an exception among men. There may be men outwardly loyal to their wives, but their thoughts may go astray.

Lord Rama was the one whose thoughts and words never went astray. When Sita is lost, and Lord Rama sees Her jewels strewn about, He mentions each piece of jewellery and laments the loss of His wife. To Lord Rama, Sita is irreplaceable.

Precisely, the moral of the story is "The heart can only beat Lub Dub and then there is no other rhythm in it. Should there be another rhythm creeping in that means the end of the heart-beat."

My Aadip Perukku Lunch @Pizza Hut

My Aadip Perukku Lunch @Pizza Hut

We just saw about the Aadip Perukku @Virginia over here. Just thought I would share a few photos of my Aadip Perukku lunch, courtesy Pizza Hut.

Owning a cute and new Coby Black DVD Player

I had a few Amazon Gift Certificates pending redemptions thanks to Symantec which I just thought would make use of them and purchase a Coby DVD Player which had been lying around in my wishlist for a seemingly long time. Perhaps for those interested here are the discussions on the three gift certificate awards:

  1. http://lavanyadeepak.blogspot.com/2010/06/winner-of-symantec-connect-gift.html
  2. http://lavanyadeepak.blogspot.com/2010/07/another-victory-with-symantec-connect.html
  3. http://lavanyadeepak.blogspot.com/2010/08/winner-of-symantec-connect-gift.html
After browsing through the Amazon catalog I choose the Coby DVD player which was the affordable and comprehensive one for home entertainment purpose. It took more than four days anyway to deliver because I opted from Free Supersaver Shipping that comes via normal USPS.

Aadi 18ம் Perukku from Virginia

Aadi 18ம் Perukku from Virginia

Today is 18th day of Aadi, which is observed with great reverence amongst the people of peninsular India. Miles away from home is not going to be an excuse for not celebrating Aadi 18ம் Perukku.

Gange cha Yamune chaiva Godavari Saraswati,
Narmade Sindhu Kaveri jalesmin sannidhim kuru

prayers bring the holy rivers to me to Virginia. Furthermore, with the affectionate and true beliefs did bring the memory and flow of river Cauvery to the small community pool all within my gated closed community complex.

Just thought I would share a couple of more hyperlinks which bring in mouth-relishing festival feasts to the desktop:

It was Suresh Kalpathy in 2003 and now Suresh Kalmady in 2010

It was Suresh Kalpathy in 2003 and now Suresh Kalmady in 2010

What came out as a biggest scam and deafening corporate misappropriation brought the downfall of 3rdAgenda, Chennai's the then blooming web development company. The misdirections started once 3rdAgenda was taken over by SSI Technologies, then headed by Suresh Kalpathi. Suresh' had virtually ripped off the then CEO as one of the interview with Ganesh Mandalam reveals "I would have thought twice about sharing equity and consequently ownership, in the way that we did earlier.". Check out the complete interview here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0EB2Q2KL

Next this year sees a similar crank in India called Suresh Kalmady who is facing CWG corruption charges. Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85UutBfEHIY&feature=player_embedded

Kalpathy then, Kalmady now, who is going to be the next Kamnaati*?

[*Kamnaati in Tamil means the most obscene and vulgar fraud]

Sify snores off everyday at 4 AM to 5.30 AM Indian Time

Sify snores off everyday at 4 AM to 5.30 AM Indian Time

The Internet World Wide Web is regarded as a 24x7 office and Email is considered a Personal Assistanct to us 24x7. I admit that email services need a routine maintenance. But definitely these should not be on a daily basis right? But interestingly the whole of past two weeks Sify Mail demonstrated this attitude. Around 4 AM to 5.30 AM Indian Time Sify gets to turn off the servers I believe. When you try logging on, it just spells out a conflict in logon request as illustrated below:

I have reported the same to Sify Team too and I would keep you posted with any updates received from there.
