Get Reached When Unreachable

Get Reached When Unreachable
Hutch, Airtel and BSNL have been pioneering of late to have thier subscribers reachable whenever and wherever they are. The latest innovations from both of them is 'Missed Call Alerts'.

How it works?

When you are out of network coverage area or switched off or busy, the network keeps recording the incoming calls CLI automatically and compiles them. The moment you log back into the network, you get SMS alerts stating what calls went missed, how many times and what date and time.

How to subscribe?

  1. For Hutch, you get a SMS stating that there are missed calls. You need to send a SMS to a particular number which is chargeable at a VAS value of INR 3.0/- per message and you get the list of number missed per unreachable session.
  2. For Airtel (Chennai), you need to subscribed to 'Missed Call Alert' service by sending SUB to 567 (Toll Free). You would be subscribed to the service and then keep recieving Missed Call Alerts carrying the number missed and how many times and at what date and time. The service is charged at a flat rate of INR 10/- per month.
  3. For BSNL (Chennai Telephones GSM), you need have the Call Divert conditionally to 17010 (Toll Free) and you would get missed call alerts carrying the number missed and how many times and at what date and time. The service is currently free of charged to all subscribers.

Welcoming the Rains

Welcoming the Rains

After a long arduous ordeal with the prickling summer sultry sun rays, Chennai seems to be seeing some light at the end of the tunnel at the end of the year 2006. North East monsoons have arrived in Bay of Bengal. Since from last Wednesday, thunderstorms and rains are taking the entire state of Tamil Nadu drenching wet like anything.

Almost right the previous wednesday, I took a ride in my vehicle to enjoy the panoramic beauty of evening monsoon clouds and me too got fully drenched in the rain. But that rain shower did open up many thoughts and feelings and it did bring in many renaissance within me.  It did open up new avenues of friendship in more quarters than one.

While returning back to home on Wednesday right after Chennai Airport there was real thunderstorms. Had I crossed Pallavaram, there would have been a real mess since there are no shelters till I reach Chromepet other than a sparse petrol (gas) stations, which are scattered sparsely.  Quite fortunately, I reached near Hotel Manickam Grand. I would really like to appreciate the hospitality of the staff that inspite of being a star-grade hotel, they were very kind enough to allow the ongoers to wait at the porticos of the hotel alongside allowing people to park the vehicles regardless of the inconvenience of having the place gather much of dirt and water since everybody were drenched. I had a dental treatment too and hence managed to purchase a small umbrella at the next stall and waiting for a while for about forty minutes, then started from there.

No further I have reached near the next petrol bunk, there was huge traffic jam near the Thiruneermalai junction. It took a while to clear from this jam. So to avoid next traffic jams near Tambaram, I took the new MIT flyovers and the Chitlapakkam route, braving the fact that there may be knee deep waters.  It was small small roads with plethora of potholes and waters filled. Many thanks to my Lord, Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa that there were no obstacles and in less than thirty minutes, I reached the Rajakilpakkam road.

I think this rain was more a renaissance since I got some nice friends at Rajakilpakkam besides I sincerely feel that even after I got a bit of temperature in the night because of medication and getting drenched that the rain has washed off any sins. With this blog post, I would like to sincerely confess to my Lord that I surrender unto Himself (Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa) in complete prapatti [Absolute Surrender or Saranagathi to the Lord] and I think this rain has been the blessing of the Lord to take me the correct path of life without getting distractions from mundane pleasures of any kind. There is no gain without pain and hence I think with more accrued sins in my account, it was the blessing of the Lord to underdo this pain to cleanse myself mentally and physically and reorient towards His divine service.

Goddess to help finding you the lost thing...[Arakkasu Amman]

Goddess to help finding you the lost thing...[Arakkasu Amman]

We miss quite a few things and then search sky and valley and pillar to post. We would have misplaced our credit card in our friends car and after he has started off, we would be searching up and down, ransacking our workplace and residence searching for the same. If it had been suspicious guy like me, I would go to even the extent of calling the credit card institution, calling for a temporary freezing of the card and or its transactions.

Recently, I came across in a Tamil Magazine called Gnana Alayam about a goddess called 'Arakkasu Amman', who can be prayed at the time when your missed thing is unable to be traced. Hey Pronto! Almost as quick as possible, you are able to get the missed thing. Today being Ramzan holiday, and I was relatively free. I was just searching for this temple details in library and with my friends. I could just get another Yahoo Answers Expert commenting on this temple but could not get more details. I would try to contact the Gnana Alayam and other media to get more details regarding the temple. For the curious, here is the mention of Arakkasu Amman in Yahoo Answers.

Once you get the thing though not mandatory, it would be of gratitude that you can show to the Lordess that you can make some panagam (Sweet and Simple Drink made out of jaggery, cardomom powder and ginger) and dedicate it to the Lordess. Check out this post by Shoba Narayan on how to prepare panagam.

Health Checkup for my Kinetic Zing

Health Checkup for my Kinetic Zing

My Kinetic Zing was experiencing some coughs and throat congestion problems and he had a brief heath checkup today at a nearby clinic. Since the climate was also relatively cool, a tour around till Guindy so that he could get alright with a more fresh breathing air.

It was two persons that turned on my ignition key passionately for long runs and just not local trips. They are respected to the core and respectively the following:

  1. Santosh Kumar Sinha (aka) Bajrangbali (now in Bangalore)
  2. Visu (Poonamalee). He works as a tailor and I know him since my school age.
While casually talking to him one day night, Santosh was very particular and instrumental in having me prevening waste of time over public transportation services, besides the acute travel pains.

Celebrations with fervour -- The Lights Festival (Deepavali)

Celebrations with fervour -- The Lights Festival (Deepavali)

It was Diwali celebrations yesterday throughout the nation and worldwide for Indians. Among all festivals, Diwali commands a unique place of pride and prestige for one and all. Perhaps for the interested reader, we also have a Happy Diwali post on the eve of Deepavali. Turning back to the pages of history, Deepavali inherits multiple reasons. A few of them in nutshell are:

  1. Slaying down of the wicked king Narakasura by Lord Krishna and bringing the righteousness on the face of the earth. Hence Diwali falls on Naraka Chathurdasi and the holy oil bath that we take in the wee hours of Deepavali is called as Naraka Chathurdasi Snanam. We dress ourselves in splendor and burn crackers to commomorate the victory of righteousness (Lord Krishna) over the unrighteousness (Narakasura, the wicked king).
  2. Return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after completing his two seven years (14 years) exile in the forest. It is a nice lyrics in Kamba Ramayanam that he describes as two seven years instead of fourteen years.

Coming back to the discussion, my Deepavali celebrations were almost attending some Requirements Engineering Web Presentations late over the night and returning back home only at 0300 hours. With an alarm waking up at 0400 hours, had a brief head bath and a brief poojas, resumed back the sleep to wake up sometime at 1200. This was because the whole of the previous three days I had been staying late to attend the Web Seminars over the said topic.

I started at about 1300 and joined by my friend in Velacherry, we went to Triplicane temple. Since we reached quite early, there were'nt much crowd and had darshan. After a brief trip in the beach, we took 45 A to Velacherry back. This was again an interesting journey since this would take you through all important places and a Diwali City Tour perhaps. The evening entertainment was the film Saami in Sun TV. Perhaps for those interested, here is a brief review of this film Saami written long back in MouthShut.com.

All along the city, Deepavali was witnessed by all colorful charming celebrations adored by sizzling sparking shiny showers of firework artworks throughout. Kudos to all those in fireworks industry for thier all pervasive enthusiasm throughout the worldwide celebrations making the festival colorful.

  4. Here we give a Flash Movie file prepared by HinduNet Inc.

Songs To Welcome Callers -- Boon or Bane

Songs To Welcome Callers -- Boon or Bane

In India the practice of having musical notes and cine songs instead of the traditional Tring Tring in phones is becoming increasingly common. It is called in different names in Chennai and charged with exorbitant rates like Airtel calling it Hello Tunes, Hutch calling it Caller Tunes, Aircel calling it Dialer Tunes.

Though each operator calls it in thier own attractive names the underlying concept is same. When a caller calls you in your mobile or landline number activated with this service, the telephone switch in your attached exchange instead of sending the traditional Tring Tring tone back to the caller (for eight rings), sends the musical notes to the caller. The operators and marketing enthusiasts claim that this would keep the caller stay tuned to the phone. For the operators it means an extra rental charged for this. They charged a fixed charge for setting up the tone as 'Caller Tune' and then a fixed monthly rental for availing this service.

In fact, if you carefully watch the marketing activities of providers like Airtel, if you have'nt subscribed, every now and then you would be getting a spam call from these operators. I am just trying to summarize a few points on these new innovation and I feel that there are more demerits with them rather than advantages.

  1. First and foremost I feel that it violates the normal global telecommunications standards. With the worldwide Tring Tring, you can say that the first ring is for acknowledging the call to the switch and the second tring indicates that CLI gets flashed in the subscribers' device (if he has subscribed to that service -- Network subscription) Hence for this reason, CLI enabled instruments' manuals say that the call need to be answered only after the device rings at least two times. And normally after eight rings the call is claimed to be 'Unanswered'. An unanswered call can be handled by a variety of pre-configured ways. A few of the known ways are:
    1. Call drops
    2. A pre-recorded network voice "The subscriber is not able to answer the call now" is given.
    3. The call is transferred to a Voice Mail box.

Now with the Tring Tring getting extinct and each of the song having its own length, intonation, we do not have a standard to demarcate between the individual rings.
  2. The mobile number is localized. With a very local vernacular song being played while the caller is calling the person and if the person who is calling is from an alien country he might not know whether it is a message or an abuse or some other technical snag.
  3. Out of Context songs: Some of the songs might be totally out of context. For example, recently when I called a HDFC Marketing agent, he was having the song "Vaazha Meenukkum Vilangu Meenukkum Kalyanam". But what happens if the caller is trying to convey some obituary message. Then this song is totally out of its focus and makes the caller to run crazy. Similar out of context situations befit the problems of eve-teasing. The traditional Tring Tring is world-standards since it just serves its intended purpose -- communication without getting infected by any emotions -- regionally, religion-wise, culture-wise.
  4. Telecommunications value-added services would not be available. If you have services like Call Waiting where you can know when the person you are dialling is busy talking, you would get a variant of Tring Tring. But with such musical notes enabled, this 'Call Waiting' Dial Tone is no more possible.
  5. Religius Sentiments disturbed. Normally it is said that certain mantras like Gayatri Mantra should not be recited in the public. And with these HelloTunes, I could see scores of people having Gayatri Mantra as thier Hello Tunes.
Currently it is good that BSNL does not jump into this ugly marketing and they still preserve sticking on to the classic standard Tring Tring. We hope that even the private operators and subscribers would soon realize the folly and limitations of these musical rings and would make some corrective actions.

An Interesting Bus Journey from Tambaram to Guindy

An Interesting Bus Journey from Tambaram to Guindy

Today being Saturday, I was sleeping till about noon and then I started out. I had my weekly Triplicane temple visit and a few  TODOs in my TaskList scheduled.  Normally, the bus stop at my place is near Kamarajapuram and I had to walk till there since not all buses stop at the bus stop near me (Rajakilpakkam). While I crossed today the Rajakilpakkam bus stand, I saw two bus conductors standing there and a T51 was coming that time.  I just thought I would wait a while to ascertain whether these guys are able to stop the vehicle there. And my speculation did come true and the bus stopped. It was almost on par VVIP boarding since other than white-board (ordinary) buses, other LSS services don't stop in that bus stand. And when I landed in Medawalkam to get the next bus, again it was a fun when M21 just was waiting there to reach upto Vijayanagar.

But one thing I observed with M21 today was the intensity of the potholes that adore the roads of Chennai. Typically one can be a silent witness of this when the bus is also semi-empty and you sit somewhere near the rear seat. The rear seat of the bus is known to give more bumps. And normally physically weak or ailing patients are discouraged from taking the rear (long single joint) seats due to this reason. Too many bumps like that might induce nausea, head-ache, vomitting sensations and also digestive problems. I think Metropolitan Transport Corporation should consider some strategy to workaround this issue.

Again while taking the bus from  Vijayanagar to Guindy, it was some philosophical learning there. I was tooking the aisle seat in D70. Since the climate is surreptitiously sultry even at the wake of monsoons in many parts of the state, I was wishing and looking out if some window seat could get empty. Right at that time, one more D70 Express was shunting back and forth to get a comfortable parking. And the chatterbox duo occupants in the front seat of mine immediately jumped out mistaking it for the starting, unheeding the alerts of the vendors who told only the bus we are sitting is going to start. And I jumped into that seat to avail the opportunity of getting the window seat, just like the kingfisher bird grasping the fish after a wait. Early bird catches the worm right? And during the journey one more philosophical learning and a movie scene came to my mind.  In a film, Jaishankar actor was acting as God and he was talking to his devotee (YG Mahendran) near the restaurant explaining him that life and death are common in the world and the body is just an inn for the soul. This birth the soul is taking this shirt (body) and it would jump to the next one during the next birth. To explain him, he asked YGM to go and sit in the table of the restaurant. YG rebuked stating that "Where to sit? The table is full". Now the God did a magic and one guy ran away. Now he asked YG to go and sit. Now YG understood about the jumping of soul from wearing one shirt to another.

HealthWatch for my Watch

HealthWatch for my Watch

The past week had been a bit of doctor consultations and sittings for my wrist watch manufactured by HMT Watches. Initially, my MSN Calendar did give me a reminder that there is a need to check the battery strength since it was about an year and normal battery comes to an average of one year. With a fast and quick boarding in the bus, the watch suffered some bruises on his face. So the first sitting with a doctor (watch serviceman :)) was to have the glass replaced. The second sitting was that the keypin was old and needed to be replaced. This was done.

For the past two days, the strap is facing some issue and it is being replaced with a specialist consultant. Interestingly my watch is currently ten years old.

Responding to the Attitude Hostility to Commitment

Responding to the Attitude Hostility to Commitment

Commitment to the duty that we have in hand is by far the most significant part of the cake that is involved in completing a given task to its perfection. This applies to any profession or task that we have in hand. This thought of mind was nurturing in my mind for sometime and while travelling today from Tambaram to Guindy and a song that was playing in the bus took my mind to some remote journeys for various phases of introspection and eventually to share the same over here.

Particularly when I encounter persons that severely lack committment to the work on hand, I strongly prefer to keep them off the bay. I am particularly intimidated when someone at the close proximity displays such attitude. While I was in my previous organization, my the then CEO (Srinivas Thirunagari) used to guide me regarding this many times. Perhaps for the interested reader, I would like to share my earlier post enumerating the same. With those guidances in place, now I am able to comfortably and safely ignore such clowns and jerks rather than chiding them thus hurting thier ego and making the place dirty. And as I have discussed in yet another post ("Fate of Freshers"), I still get very much intimidated when it comes thieving of credits. I am actually strongly against this and I really can give a long long list of enemies that I have earned who I have openly brought to limelight time and again.

Well! Now comes the interesting discussion on why this came as a point of debate instead of a good topic lying around in my mind. The credit of the same goes to bus number 79 (Kanchipuram - Chennai) whose DVD stereo which was playing the famous song from Shimla Special which has the lyrics like Nee Sollu Nandalala. It is a very famous song of Kamalhasan and I think the playback singer is SP Balasubramanian ('Padum Nila'). Since Kamal used to very much get intimidated by false friends and pretenders, he used to address the Lord and ask him whether what he does his correct or wrong? ("Naan enna kalla paala. Nee sollu Nanda Lala?")

[Nee Sollu Nanda Lala from Simla Special]

I also truly feel that people who lack commitment alone involves in credit thefts in that they attempt to take credit of the work done by others. They just simply lack the skill in thier workmanship. Again this makes us get intimidated. As in Sindhu Bhairavi, JKB (Sivakumar) used to tell to Sindhu (Suhasini) while discussing about people who have zero knowledge in music "I am getting so intimidated when I am forced to talk to people who have absolutely no knowledge and/or love for music."

Readers --> What do you feel about lack of commitment syndromes that you encounter in your work and about credit thefts? Share your views.

Bangalore becomes Bengaluru from November 1

Bangalore becomes Bengaluru from November 1

Come November 1. Bangalore would follow the other metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and shed its colonial name 'Bangalore' and would revert back to its pre-colonial name 'Bengaluru'. The name change process and discussion which had been running for a while since September seems to have got more official as claimed in Mangalorean.com. We humbly hope that the name change would also restore the city to the powerful greenery that had got it a glorious name "Garden City" and minimize the traffic problems there.

In a few words and to describe very briefly from my experience to Bangalore (Bengaluru): "A city of charm and a heaven on earth. The gentle weather and the spectacular cool nature really does not fail to enthrall anyone.

Rajnikanth becomes grandfather

Rajnikanth becomes grandfather

The most preferred and favorite actor of Southern India with his glory reaching peak of the peak (sigarathai adainthal vaanithal eru) in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala has been promoted by his daughter as grandfather. His daughter (Aishwarya) who is married to actor Dhanush, gave birth to a boy baby in a chennai hospital on 10th October 2006 at 1710 hours.

Even though he has been promoted as grandfather, there are still his style that keeps his fans across the world captivated and enthralled to him. Be it an action movie like Tillu Mullu or a religious film like Raghavendra or one of his latest box office hits like Padayappa or the ongoing film shooting like Shivaji this has been an eternal truth. He gives a very good message and an encouraging tone to the world. In Padayappa, Neelambari (Ramya Krishnan) after breaking out from her self-created prison-room met Padayappa and very egoistically would comment "Even though you are aged, I like you. You know the reason. That is your hair style". With a more pristine smile, Rajini would reply "Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. It was born with me and has been with me. It would never depart away from me". And coming to the encouraging tone that he used to give are the lyrics "Singanadai pottu sigarathil eru. Sigarathai adainthal vanathil eru".

Let us wish him all success in all spheres of life and would pray the Lord to shower him blessings to get more laurels and success.

Streamlining the paths that youth take

International Youth Fellowship -- Streamlining the paths that youth take

Sometime previous Monday, while about to climb the stairs of Tambaram Railway Station, a guy gave me a pamphlet. I was just thinking that this would be one more ICICI Bank Personal Loans. So before dropping it down, I glimpsed through a few lines and it was something different -- something that was intended to address the maladies that the society is currently facing. The current society and the youth to be more precise are haunted by plethora of evils of all kinds and creeds on the pretext of fashion. It is really disgusting that tattered jeans with a minimum of twenty pockets is becoming a fashion. One other guy was telling jeans is best since you can use it without washing even for four days. Damn! Would'nt that stink like anything?

Alongside this is the antisocials who seduce youths towards girls and drugs, creating a major havoc for the society. The net effect is that youth who are currently in colleges have thier performance steeply declined. Even at workplace, they only feel like enjoying thier time at the expense of the organization. Now coming to the mainstream discussion, this pamplet was discussion about a korean based society. These people organize global events for youth to address and rejuvenate them from all these social maladies. The downside is that it incurs an international travel, which for most of us would be prohibitive in terms of budget.

Tip: I have been recieving comments from readers worldwide to remove the link to International Youth Fellowship on the grounds that this society has tieups with fanatic protestant movements in various parts of the world. I would strongly feel that my weblog would not abet any such practices and hence removing the link. I would offer my sincere thanks to K. P. Iyer for bringing this to my attention. Thank you, so much.

Nevermind, we have a lot of institutes like Vedanta Institute which offers courses and practices right in our places. Check out them over here:

  1. Vedanta Institute
  2. Chinmaya Mission
And, our president, Dr. A. P.J. Abdul Kalam has given an elegant seven point oath for the Youth to follow as part of his national addressing in the Independence day. Check it out here.

Remembering Gandhi and his divine principles...

Remembering Gandhi and his divine principles...

Today is Gandhi Jayanthi, birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who for his greatest non-violence principles that proved to be a very high value strategy to drive our foriegn forces from our nation, is also known with great respects as Father of our Nation. Let us spend a couple of minutes of our time, to remember and pay tribute to this noble soul as also learning from his teachings of non-violence (ahimsa) and peace-loving measures.

Let us remember and inscribe his greatest sayings for the prosperity of our homes and nation.

Truth is my religion and Ahimsa is the only way of realisation -- M. K. Gandhi

International Day of the Senior Citizens

International Day of the Senior Citizens

October 1 is also being revered as International Day of Senior Citizens. Our senior citizens need desperate attention from all quarters. According to World Health Organization (WHO), "Senior citizens need to be viewed as a positive contribution to the society streamlining its processes towards attaining the desired objectives in a most optimal way rather than viewing them in the negative perspective as a burden".

With increasing world travel and spread out families, the concept of Undivided nuclear families are getting extinct. This means the newer generation seldom knows about the sacred values of our rich heritage and culture on the pretext of modernisation. It is with pure self-conscious effort on our part, that this malady of the society can be cured.

On thier part, the government has instructed nationalized banks to patronize senior citizens with more interest in deposits. But to how much extent this is being actually materialized, which we have to ensure.

Readers: Please feel free to share your views on how to enrich the lives of our senior citizens and thus bring rich prosperity in terms of growth of the nation as well preservation of our rich heritage and culture.
